Power Distribution Automation (PDA) involves integrating sensing, control, and communication technologies into the electric distribution grid to optimize performance, improve reliability, and enhance operational efficiency. RMUs are central to the realization of PDA at the secondary substation level. By equipping RMUs with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and integrating them with a Distribution Management System (DMS) or SCADA system, utilities can achieve a "smart" grid functionality. The automation features embedded in modern RMUs enable control center operators to execute real-time load management, quickly re-route power during an outage, and monitor system parameters remotely. This substantially reduces human intervention, minimizes outage duration, and increases overall network resilience. Furthermore, PDA utilizes the data collected by smart RMUs for advanced analytics, enabling predictive maintenance that anticipates equipment failures before they occur. The integration of RMUs into PDA is a key step in migrating from a traditional, reactive grid structure to a modern, self-healing, and proactive power distribution network.
